Yarm 1914

Killed in action 24 May 1915 France & Flanders. He is recorded on Egglescliffe’s Memorial and was living at Urlay Nook on enlistment. Since only one R Wallinger fell in the war there can be no doubt about this.

Yarm1914 believe that Richard George was born in 1882 in Seaton Carew. His father William James Wallinger from Nothamptonshire married Ellen Hansom from Mansfield in Stokesley district in 1877 and moved to Seaton Carew where he was a coachman. The family moved via Darlington to Urlay Nook in 1890 when William became a general labourer at the chemical works. In 1905 Richard he married Jane Ann Hutchinson from Barton in Yorkshire, two years his junior and also living in Urlay Nook. Her father will have known the Wallingers from the chemical works. In 1906 Richard's father died and his mother married Robert Hansom the following year and remained in Urlay Nook with two of her sons and a step daughter. Robert from Mansfield was living at the time with his brother's family in Eaglescliffe and will have known his distant relative's family. In 1911 Richard was living in New Cottage, Urlay Nook with his wife, daughter Ellen who was 4 and a lodger Bob Hutchinson who was one of Jane's brothers. His brother Septimus married Maud Honeyman on 5 April 1912 and moved to 17 Newlands Road in Eaglescliffe. He enlisted on 16 December 1914 into the Royal Field Artillery and survived the war.
